Total superannuation assets were $4.2 trillion at the end of the December 2024 quarter, increasing by 2.1 per cent over the quarter.
The commentary below relates to funds with more than six members.
Employer contributions totalled $37.3 billion for the quarter and $129.9 billion for the year ending in December 2024, which represented a 10.8 per cent increase compared to the year ending in December 2023. This is in part due to the Superannuation Guarantee (SG) rate increase to 11.5 per cent from 1 July 2024, employment growth over the year and higher wage growth.
Member contributions were $11.8 billion for the quarter and $54.1 billion for the year ending December 2024, 26.7 per cent higher than the previous year.
Benefit payments totalled $33.0 billion for the quarter and $124.4 billion for the year ending December 2024, a 12.0 per cent increase compared to the year to December 2023.
The rate of return (ROR) for entities with more than six members was a strong 11.1 per cent for the year to December 2024. The five-year average annualised ROR was 6.0 per cent.
